![]() ![]() I only used to write stuff when I was sad. “It’s not that I'm trying to dominate people’s airwaves, but just that as I get older, as I develop, the thing that’s changing is I want to make music for different moods. “It’s like a Brian Eno album title isn't it? ‘ Music For Toilets’,” says Blake with a laugh that flashes his teeth. “I want to have tunes that people can play at a party, that they can play late night with their mates and also, you know, tunes for when you’re sitting on the toilet.”Ī potential concept album in the offing, perhaps. ![]() “I do genuinely want to make music for people who are just sitting by the swimming pool,” he says, earnestly. I write music for those moments sometimes.” He adds, though, that he’s recently been pushing himself to make different kinds of music drawn from other sides of his personality. “If we didn't have music and film and writing that we could turn to in those moments, in the way I know I certainly do, it’d be much harder. “The insidious trickery of depression is the fact that it puts you in a mental reality that you feel like there’s no alternative to,” he says. Having written so frankly about his mental health struggles in the past, Blake says he hopes the song shows there is light at the end of the tunnel, even if there still might be further tunnels ahead. ‘People’s tendency is to be like: “OK, so James Blake’s happy now.” That’s not what I’m saying’ “Halfway through the record I was like: ‘Hold on, you’re exec producing this and you're brilliant at it, so let’s just finish it off.’ We made a lot of music, man, even some stuff that didn’t make that record. “I think he kind of wanted me to executive produce the record, but in the end he was making all the decisions,” remembers Blake. Dave flew out to LA to work with Blake, before Blake returned the favour by travelling to London to help finish the album. Most recently, Blake sang and did production work on Dave’s insightful and urgent second record We’re All Alone In This Together, which was released in July.
